How to replace Kirby impeller INSTRUCTIONS
Some prefer remove the motor and leave the front case glued to the housing. but this is a longer
Part #119096S
( 119096 )

IMPORTANT: We strongly suggest applying this Clear Silicone Glue on the perimeter of the front edge of the Kirby Base Pan, where the Fan Case will be attached. Only after that, fasten it with the screws. It has to be done, to ensure that it is attached hermetically, and no air leaks will occur.

Before you do though - make sure you remove what remains from old gasket / sealant. Doesn't have to be perfect but just make sure that larger lumps are off so it would not get in the way of the housing being flush with the fan case.
Fancase - polished aluminum part in the front where you attach the nozzle or the hose.
Housing - the metal or plastic thing that everything is assembled on.

TIPS:
INSTRUCTIONS is the best place to start but fo those of you that just hate instructions:
  • Save your fingers - do not test the motor when it is out of the housing (if you decided to get it out). We ourselves no longer do test them if they out of housing - learned the lesson :-)
  • The shaft has the OPPOSITE THREAD ! So to get it off you need to spin it clockwise and to put the new one on - counterclockwise.
  • Reconnecting headlight - note where it is plugged in before you disconnect it. Contact is hidden so well that it is barely noticeable.

TROUBLESHOOTING:
What would cause a burnt smell from a Kirby immediately after replacing the fan? :
  1. If you had removed the motor, you may not have had installed it properly. Fan blade may be touching the housing and heating up. If you spin the shaft by hand you should feel no resistance and it should spin freely.
  2. Another issue might be that after you were done working on it you left some lubricant on the motor shaft. It makes the belt slip and due to friction between shaft and belt it heats up and starts burning the belt.
  3. The worst scenario - when old blade was broken that put the armature (rotor) out of balance. If you kept using your Kirby the vibration may have ruined bearings and made motor brushes spark and overheat causing damage to the armature copper plates (cummutator). If that is the case - you should see sparks flying like fireworks. Remove the aluminum shell of the vacuum so you can see the motor brushes.
