Rainbow e-series (one speed) separator breaks while vacuuming
Last Updated: 12/23/2014
Problem:
My one speed e-series Rainbow separator fell apart while vacuuming and pieces hit the water container from the inside breaking it as well. I bought new separator and water container and yet it happened again. Why does it keep happening ?
Possible Causes:
Several possible causes, see below for possible reasons the Rainbow Separator / Water Filter breaks.

Possible causes and solutions
1 - Not fully tightened nut that holds separator.
If the thread on motor shaft is rusted and/or dirty and does not let you tighten the nut well enough then shaft being loose inside of the separator destroys it. Install new separator and try to move it by hand. You may need to use a little bit of force to see if it is a bit loose.
Solution - clean the thread with metal brush or thread dye. Replace separator nut with new one.

2 - Someone serviced the vacuum and installed a washer or a thicker nut. Perhaps there is dirt accumulated on the nut (under separator)
This raises the separator a bit ant its edges facing vacuum above are not pressed against the plastic ring (called spider) under it. The edge may seem raised because is smoothed out so would not be sharp to handle but you should not be able to slide a paper or a fine thread between separator and that plastic ring.
Solution - remove washers, install proper nut and make sure that separator is flush and pressed to the plastic ring under it.

3 - (UNLIKELY yet possible) Excessive vibration that may occur due to dust accumulation on the inside of the separator or bad motor bearings.
if you have been using rainbow for long time and broke more than one separator this is not likely cause. Motor vibrating so much would not work long but would burn and you would have had much bigger problems than separator.
Solution - wash the separator. If motor bearings are bad you may try to replace them yourself (they are not sold by manufacturer but available from our store). However ths gets complicated so you may have to purchase whole new motor...
